Make a Plan!

As long as you properly prepare, grocery shopping for SuperFastDiet can be as easy as pie (just go easy on the actual pie!).

Set yourself up for success by following a few rules of thumb:

  • Plan your menu for the week (or realistically, just get through the next couple of days). If you’ve got kiddies to consider, you can avoid providing each member of your family with à la carte dinner service by having substitution options at the ready. They’ll slurp spaghetti while you enjoy zoodles and you can make your Super Food-packed sauce work double duty.
  • Gear up for fast days by choosing foods with maximum value per calories. As well as planning your meals, grab some snacks to have on hand; bunches of fresh celery to pair with hummus, low-sugar fruits such as rockmelon and berries, filling nuts like almonds, low-calorie soups and some indulgent dark chocolate for when you need a pick-me-up. Take some inspo from the substitutions below.
  • Think about which items you can bulk buy and stockpile (dry goods, freezables and pantry packers) and which ingredients are best bought closer to consumption for optimum freshness (super fruits, veggies and meats).
  • Organise your shopping list based on the supermarket’s layout, this will help you stay focused as well as avoiding backtracking and trespassing into temptation!
  • Always remember the grocery golden rule: Never shop on an empty stomach (hangry eyes are no joke!)
  • Don’t take the kids with you if you can help it! They’ll pester and plead for snacks you don’t want in your SuperFast kitchen. If you do buy a little junk food for them BUY THINGS YOU DON’T LIKE! (So, so important.)

#GroceryGoals

Fill your shopping trolley with all the right stuff. Hunt and gather as many Super Foods as possible!

Veggies should be a bright and varied mix of colours; Leafy greens, Asian greens, avocados, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and tomatoes (yes, we know they’re technically a fruit).
Fruits
that are low in sugar and packed with vitamins and good stuff; Melons, green apples, blueberries, goji berries and kiwis.
Fish
packed with Omega 3 including salmon and tuna and lean meat such as turkey mince, sliced beef, lamb steaks and diced chicken.
Dairy
, such as Greek yoghurt, organic milk, sour cream, soft cultured cheese and goat’s cheese, provides a great source of probiotics and calcium.
Eggs
and Beans are packed with protein, super filling and are so good for your bowel, you might toot out a ‘thank you!’
Nuts
, seeds, rice and grains that work hard such as activated nuts, chia seeds, flaxseed, high-grain bread and wraps, wild rice and non-starched pasta such as konjac.
Finally, spice up your dishes with flavours from chillies, garlic, olive oil, herbs and spices, apple cider vinegar, and fresh citrus.

Play Swapsies

Once you’ve stocked your kitchen with goodies that work for you, navigating which foods are okay to eat and which ones are no-gos becomes a struggle of the past. Satisfying your hunger with items that give you more bang for your calorie buck, particularly on days you’re in the fast car, is a sure-fire way to fill up without filling out.

The secret is all in substitution:

Now You’re Cookin’

While you might still be in the rudimentary stages of becoming a chef de cuisine, more helpful kitchen gizmos exist than you can throw a stick at! First and foremost, consider investing in a kitchen scale to weigh out accurate quantities of your tasty ingredients. Transform zucchinis into spiralling low-calorie zoodles, slice cauliflower and sweet potatoes super thin with a mandolin, grate carrots like there’s no tomorrow to pan-fry fritters galore, and when you’re feeling a bit lazy, chuck a bunch of berries in the blender and call it a day (then rinse and repeat with margaritas!).

You’re too Cool to Fool

Don’t buy into the hype. Remember, what makes foods super is the fact that they haven’t been processed, manipulated or altered; when products claim to be low-fat and sugar-free, they’re usually compensating elsewhere. Low-fat foods make up for their lack of flavour by sneaking in tons of sugar, while sugar-free culprits are full of artificial sweetening chemicals that still won’t satisfy your sweet tooth. Stick to foods that look like food and are as close to their natural state as possible. Just like their mommas made them!

Our favourite inclusions in a SuperFastDiet trolley (not including the non-dieting members of the household):
